Certification Process: A Step-by-Step Guide

Disclaimer: “Certified” refers to the ISO/IEC 17024 certification requirements, while “Certificate holder” pertains to the ASTM E2659 certificate programs’ requirements.

1. Choose the Right Certification for You
Each PECB certification has specific eligibility criteria, including education and professional experience. To determine the right PECB certification for your career, review the requirements for various certifications and align them with your professional goals. This will help ensure you select the most suitable credential.

2. Prepare for the Exam
Candidates are responsible for their own exam preparation. Although no specific set of courses or study programs is mandatory, taking relevant training courses will significantly increase your chances of success. To learn more about exam details, competency domains, and knowledge statements, visit our List of PECB exams.

3. Apply and Schedule the Exam
To schedule your certification exam, you have several options:

a) Contact one of PECB’s authorized training partners who offer both training and exam sessions. To find a training provider in your area, visit PECB Partner Directory. You can also find the PECB event schedule at PECB Events.

b) Alternatively, you can take the PECB exam remotely, allowing you to take it at your convenience from home via the PECB Exam Application. Access the application here.

4. Take the Exam
Arrive at least 30 minutes before the scheduled exam time. Late arrivals will not receive extra time and may not be allowed to enter the exam room. Valid identification (e.g., national ID, driver’s license, or passport) is required for entry.

The exam duration will vary depending on the exam type. Additional time may be granted to candidates taking the exam in a language other than their native language (upon request on the exam day).

For essay-style (open book) exams, candidates can refer to:

  • A copy of the relevant standard (paper copy)
  • Course notes from the participant handout
  • Personal notes taken during the course
  • A hard-copy dictionary

For more exam details, please refer to our Examination Rules and Policies.

5. Receive Your Exam Results
Results are sent via email within 6 to 8 weeks of the exam date. Candidates will receive a pass or fail result. In the event of failure, the candidate will be provided with feedback, including the specific areas of the exam where answers were insufficient, helping you prepare for a retake.

If you disagree with the exam results, you can file a complaint by contacting examination@pecb.com.

6. Apply for Certification
Upon passing your certification exam, you are eligible to apply for the corresponding PECB certification. To apply, complete the online Certification Application Form, providing details of your professional experience and references who can validate your credentials.

Payment for certification fees can be made online or billed to you. For further information, contact accounting@pecb.com or certification@pecb.com.

Once your application is approved, you will receive an email notification, and you can download your certification from your PECB member account.

7. Maintain Your Certification
PECB certifications are valid for three years. To maintain your certification, you must:

  • Submit Continuing Professional Development (CPD) activities
  • Pay the Annual Maintenance Fee (AMF)

Certified professionals will receive a reminder email three months before their certification renewal date, prompting them to submit their CPDs and AMF. To submit your CPD and AMF, simply log into your PECB account and provide the required details for your certification.

By following these steps, you ensure that your PECB certification remains valid, reflecting your ongoing professional development and commitment to excellence.
